My Arts Practice
I have been magnetized to drawing and painting people for as long as I can remember, from the beginnings of childhood & beyond. I find the inherent uniqueness of all people to be so visually fascinating - and how out of the nearly 9 billion, seemingly by coincidence - no two of us look quite alike.
I became inspired by the genres of hyperrealism & photo realism as I entered the academic arts world - captivated by the art of representing reality through the simple but extensive layering of shapes, gradients & colours. The rendering of a two dimensional surface into something evocative with narration, depth & meaning has always seemed to contain some level of magic. Ideally a magic that is satisfying to explore as both the painter & the viewer.
Though these genres are commonly critiqued as technically heavy, but lacking artistic creativity -
I find that this 'invisible' aspect of realism to be the most interesting part - the secret & inevitable soulful / creative dimension. Ultimately, no group of realists would ever interpret the same subject identically. Upon closer inspection - there is undoubtedly the mark & spirit of each artist, and the visual trail of choices leading to a resolved final piece.
I have deeply enjoyed this work. The process of replicating moments experienced in time - and materializing them onto the painted surface of a canvas is something that I find to be boundlessly interesting & explorable. I look forward to deepening my practice.
